Mangan, 26 Dec [IPR]: Under 50 years of statehood celebration, with the theme “Sunauulo Samriddha Ani Samarth Sikkim” Agriculture and Horticulture Department in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), a Krishi Mela-cum-Exhibition commenced in Mangan, today.
The chief guest for the event was Tshering Thendup Bhutia, Principal Director of Agriculture Department. The Special Guest was Bhim Lall Dahal, Director, Horticulture department. Also present were Bhison Pradhan, Senior Scientist-cum-HOD (KVK), Dr Pratap Subba, Additional Director (Agriculture Department), Rinzing Wangyal Bhutia, Additional Director (Horticulture Department), Enchung Bhutia, Joint Director (Agriculture Department) and officials and staff from the organising departments.
The programme began with a welcome address by Mr Bhison Pradhan, who emphasised the importance of agriculture and horticulture in Sikkim’s economy and sustainable future while warmly welcoming all attendees.
The event showcased various exhibitions, stalls and activities aimed at encouraging local farmers, entrepreneurs and youth to adopt sustainable agricultural practices while celebrating the progress achieved over the past 50 years.
In his address, Mr Bhim Lall Dahal emphasised the significance of agriculture and announced plans to organise more events as part of the 50-year celebrations. He encouraged the youth to take up farming, highlighting its importance for sustainable growth. To inspire the audience, he recited a poem about farming, leaving a motivating impression. Additionally, he shared plans to increase the cultivation of crops like avocado and kiwi, showcasing a commitment to advancing agricultural practices in the region.
Mr Padam Gurung delivered a presentation on organic farming in Sikkim and its future prospects, followed by a presentation on farming practices by Ms Karma Tshering Diki.
Later, Mr Bhison Pradhan provided a presentation, highlighting the initiatives and contributions of KVK Mangan to the region’s agricultural development.
Tokens and soil health cards were distributed during the programme to support and encourage sustainable agricultural practices.
Mr Thendup addressed the gathering, discussing various topics including farming practices, cardamom plantation and other agricultural developments.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Gaurav Tirwa, Horticulture Development Officer, Dzongu.
