10 run 97KMs from Gangtok to Darjeeling, dedicate ultra-run to Dalai Lama


Gangtok, 07 Jul:

A group of runners from Sikkim and Darjeeling paid homage to the Dalai Lama on his 87th birthday by dedicating a gruelling 14-hour run from Gangtok to Darjeeling to His Holiness.

Ten runners took off from Gangtok at midnight as the date switched to 06 July, the Dalai Lama’s birthday, and were flagged in at Chowrasta at 4:30PM later the same day, after having run through sweltering heat, rain, and the brutal Peshok incline.

Bhaichung Bhutia, BasantTamang, PhurbaTamang, PempaTashi Bhutia, BhupendraSubba and BharatiGurung from Sikkim and Wangdian Bhutia, Tshering Bhutia, SudarshanTamang and KushalDewan from Darjeeling participated in this Ultra Run organized by the Tibetan community of Darjeeling and supported by the Tibetan Welfare Office, Darjeeling.

19-year-old PempaTashi Bhutia was the youngest runner in the group.

The runners received a warm welcome and felicitations on reaching Darjeeling.

The main objective of the run was to pray for the long life of the Dalai Lama and to spread his message of peace, harmony, love and compassion.
