15-yr-old made Panchayat President for a day

GANGTOK, 25 Feb: In a unique initiative, 15-year-old Priyanka Rai from Lungchok ward was made Panchayat President of Lungchok- Kameray in South District for a day. In a function organized

today, the class X student of Sumbuk senior secondary school took oath of office and placed proposals to organise awareness programmes on drug abuse, women’s empowerment and child abuse issues. She also suggested organising Bal Mela where youngsters get opportunities to explore hidden talents.

Panchayat President of the day, Priyanka Rai expressed her gratitude to the sitting Panchayat President, Deoraj Rai for believing in her and giving her the opportunity to serve the GPU as Panchayat

President for a day. The programme, organized by Lungchok-Kameray GPU, was attended by District Child Protection Officer, South, Roshnila Gurung as the chief guest. It was also attended by Principal,

GP Sharma, Assistant Director Sumbuk BAC, Ganga Dahal among others dignitaries. During the programme, the sitting Panchayat President highlighted all the activities and developmental works

carried out in the GPU through a power presentation. In her address, DCPO South appreciated

the initiative of the GPU for setting an example by involving the younger generation in the affairs of Panchayati Raj. She also informed that SIRD Karfectar will be sponsoring Child Empowerment

Centers in 25 GPUs across the state. The DCPO informed that Suhana Rai and Priyanka Rai from Lungchok Kamerey GPU have been selected as members of District Child Parliament to be held in Namchi on 28 Feb. “This year we sent a 16-year-old Swastika Manger from Poklok-Denchung

GPU to represent Sikkim at National Inclusive Children's Parliament, where she bagged second highest votes to get elected as Deputy Prime Minister. We will be sending Priyanka Rai from this GPU next,” she informed. She also assured to ensure that proposals made by Priyanka Rai are implemented

and announced to organize a Personality Development Programme in the month of April. In his address, Panchayat President, Deoraj Rai stated that the main objective of organizing a programme of One Day Panchayat was to motivate and inspire young talents like Priyanka Rai towards serving the society and involve them in rural governance. He also highlighted the activities carried out in the GPU like cleanliness drive, blood donation camp, awareness programme and tourism development programmes.
