18th Sikkim State Level Boxing Championship concludes in Soreong

Soreng, 29 Dec [IPR]: The 18th Sikkim State Boxing Championship concluded at the Soreng Senior Secondary School today.

The fourth and final day of the event had Minister (Sports and Youth Affairs), Kunga Nima Lepcha, as chief guest. The Minister was accompanied by MLA Aditya Golay, along with Chairpersons, Advisors, DC (West), Karma R. Bonpo, Dronacharya Awardee cum National Boxing Coach Smt. Sandhya Gurung and other dignitaries.

The program commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest followed by the National Anthem.

The Minister addressed the audiences with warm greetings and keeping in view of the nature of the game, he spoke briefly. He began his address by advising the athletes to take each win and loss as a part of the learning process in achieving their goal. Setting up a goal/aim must always be the first step towards accomplishing glory, he quoted.

He also added that one must play any sport with the spirit of the game and without much focusing on the outcome. He reiterated that in order to acquire success, one has to follow 4 basic rules of life: Discipline, Training, Dedication and Perseverance.

Fondly reminiscing his early days of employment in the West District as the DIO, he said that Soreng and its people have always been close to his heart and coming back to this place brings him, his most cherished memories.

Sparing a moment to remember the former Chief Minister, Late N.B Bhandari he said that he is fortunate enough to call him as his mentor and regarded him as the true Son of the Soil.

Mr Lepcha commended the MLA Aditya Golay for his relentless efforts towards the betterment of his constituency. He added that Sports in the new district of Soreng will definitely flourish under the young MLA's dynamic leadership.

On his closing remarks, he thanked the organizing committee for inviting him as the Chief Guest and also extended his warm wishes to the audience on the auspicious occasion of Tamu Lochar, Losoong and blessings for the New Year.

Earlier, the program had a welcome speech delivered by the Advisor (SYA) cum President of the Organizing Committee, M.N. Subba. Followed by a short report on the Tournament by General Secretary (West District Boxing Association), Paru Hang Subba.

The program also included the felicitation of Honorary Captain cum Senior Boxer Sahadev Rai, Senior Reporter Sagar Chettri and Retd. DGP S.D Negi from the hands of the Chief Guest on behalf of State Amateur Boxing Association for their contributions towards promoting the sport.

Also included were the Letter of Appreciation conferred to Karma R. Bonpo (DC West) and Dronacharya Awardee Sandhya Gurung by the Organizing Committee. Simultaneously, the Organizing Committee presented a token of Appreciation to Minister Lepcha, MLA Aditya Golay and local boxer Pavitra Pradhan.

Sabita Pariyar was adjudged the Best Referee and Anuj Pradhan the Best Coach.

It may be mentioned that a total of 119 boxers had participated under 3 main groups of Junior (15 to 16 years), Youth (17 to 18 years) and Senior (19 to 40 years) of various categories. The Gold medalist from each of the categories will represent the State in the Nationals.
