Lall Bazaar cabbies go eco-friendly for Viswakarma Puja

Gangtok, 13 Sept:

Sikkim Local Taxi Drivers' Association, Lall Bazaar has announced that it will celebrate Viswakarma Puja this year with an anti-drugs football match and contributions to social causes.

Speaking at a press conference on 12 September, the association's president, Lakpa Sherpa said that Sikkim was recently adjudged as the cleanest state in a survey carried out by the National Sample Survey Organisation [NSSO]. In view of this, the association has decided to lend a hand in maintaining cleanliness in the state by celebrating Viswakarma Puja in an eco-friendly and unique manner.

“The association has decided not to use pandal, statue and music this time to avoid air, noise and water pollution during this puja. Instead of spending big on the puja we have decided to make contributions to an old age home and destitute home,” Mr Sherpa said. The association has decided to conduct a small puja at its office at Lall Bazaar on Viswakarma Puja.

On 15 September, the association is organising a football match with an anti-drugs message at Paljor Stadium for members of the association.

On 16 September, the association will visit Children Welfare Society’s Home for Destitute, orphans and differently abled children at Bojoghari to donate a music system and track suits and other items to 12 children of the home.

On the day of the puja i.e 17 September, the association is scheduled to visit Ishwarambha Old Age Home at Jalipool to provide clothes and other essential materials.

“We have not raised any donation from outside but this time we are making these contributions from the money collected from our members and funds of our association,” Mr Sherpa informed. He added that the association has been trying to set an example to encourage other organisations to support needy people and contribute in keeping the state neat and clean.
