Boxing begins at MG Marg


Gangtok, 15 Sept:

The 15th edition of the State Open Boxing Championship 2016 began at MG Marg this morning. The four-day long championship is being organised by the East District Boxing Association [EDBA] and the ring has been set up in front of the Tourism Information Centre.

A total of 285 pugilists from different boxing clubs, SAI Namchi and Sikkim Police are participating in the sub junior [boys and girls] and senior [men and women] categories of the championship.

The inaugural function of the championship had Agriculture Minister Somnath Poudyal as chief guest, accompanied by Gangtok MLA, Pintso Chopel Lepcha, who is also the chairperson of the organising committee, Mayor Shakti Singh Chaudhary and officials of EDBA, Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association and the general public.

In his inaugural address, the Minister stressed that such events will provide better exposure and a platform to local athletes and will also encourage them to prepare better for future competitions at higher levels. He suggested that such events also be held in rural corners of the State. Mr Poudyal conveyed his best wishes to all the participating pugilists.

Gangtok MLA, Mr Lepcha encouraged all participants to play in the true spirit of sports. He stated that participation is more important than winning or losing in the competition. Mr Lepcha added that the event has been organised to inspire the youth in the field of sports.

The inaugural function was followed by the pre quarter-final round of the championship. UDHD Minister NK Subba was present as the chief guest for the afternoon session of the function.
