RM&DD lifts inter-departmental football trophy

Gangtok, 19 Sept:

Rural Management & Development Department emerged the champion at the 5th Inter-Departmental Football Tournament 2016. It took on Human Resource Development Department [Teachers] in the final match here at Paljor Stadium today and won it convincingly at 4-0.

RMDD had reached the finals defeating Health Department in the semi-final while HRDD [Teachers] secured its berth in the finals by edging past Sports & Youth Affairs Department.

In the final match today, both teams started off attacking, but only RM&DD strikers appear to have laced up their goal scoring boots. With the help of an early goal by Doniv Rai in the 5th minute, RMDD finished the first half with a 1-0 lead.

Soon into the second half, Sangay Chopel extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 37th minute. Each half is 35 minutes in this inter-departmental format. In response, HRDD-Teachers played their hearts out to bounce back into the match but another goal for RMDD by Diwakar Rai in the 65th minute extended the lead further to 3-0.

In the dying minutes of the match, Doniv Rai completed his brace to seal a 4-0 victory for RM&DD.

The final match of the tournament was chaired by the Transport Minister, DT Lepcha as chief guest, who handed over the trophies and certificates to its winners.

The organisers presented a cash prize of Rs 60,000 to the winning team along with trophies and cash prize of Rs 40,000 for the runners-up team.

The Best Goalkeeper trophy went to Sangay Bhutia of State Bank of Sikkim. Jigmee D Bhutia of Higher Education received the Man of the Tournament trophy, while Tshering Wangyal Lepcha of HRDD-Teachers adjudged Man of the final Match.

Doniv Rai of RMDD took home the golden boots for his 11 goals. The Best Disciplined team trophy was presented to the combined team of Buildings & Housing Department and Public Health Engineering Department. Kumar Bhusal of Buildings and Housing Department was adjudged the Best Veteran player of the tournament.

In his valedictory address, the chief guest congratulated Boys Club for successfully organising the tournament.

The final match also featured the performance of a dance group from Nagaland and band display by SUMI, Kalimpong.

A total of 31 teams had participated in this month-long tournament.
