Having recovered from a severe injury, Sikkim’s Sonam Zangpo Bhutia is back on the field and this time he is not quitting. The 23 year old footballer is currently playing for the Ulkha Football Club of Siliguri at the ongoing Siliguri Super Division League.
Sonam hails from Shotak basti beyond Tashi View Point in East Sikkim and has played in several state and national level tournaments. He has kitted up for renowned clubs of the State like United Sikkim Football Club and the nation, like Mohun Bagan.
He really took off professionally from Sports Authority of India, Namchi.
After a string of wonderful performances on the field, he was called up by Mohun Bagan SAIL Academy coach, Shyam Thapa to undergo training under his supervision.
However, he had to return to Namchi to complete his studies after which he played for United Sikkim Football Club in 2012 for two years and then for Mohun Bagan in 2014.
He also represented Mohammaden Sporting Club, Kolkata last year  when the club clinched the All India Governor’s Gold Cup here at Paljor Stadium.
He also played in the Chennai League for three months in 2016 and represented Hindustan Football Club of Chennai.
Sonam’s present club, Ulkha Club of Siliguri, is currently in the running for the ongoing Siliguri Super Division League being organized by the Siliguri Mahukuma Krira Parishad. The league officially kicked off on 15 May and is scheduled to conclude on 29 June.
Ulkha Club has played five matches thus far with two wins, one loss and one draw. With five more matches left, the club is looking forward to win the league.
After ending the league, Sonam plans to try to get into national clubs either in Kolkata or Shillong.
