SIKKIM FORMS COMMITTEE IN SUPPORT OF DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT IN DARJ HILLS

Gangtok, 18 Jun:

In a move to extend support to the people’s movement for Gorkhaland state in neighbouring Darjeeling, a group of people from various walks of life and professions came together here today and formed “Ganatantrik Jan Andolan Samarthan Samiti, Sikkim” (Committee in Support of Democratic People’s Movement).

The committee elected former Minister, Thukchuk Lachungpa as the president and nominated journalists Rupesh Sharma and Prabin Khaling as secretaries.

The committee also has Nepali Sahitya Parishad president, Rudra Poudyal, former Secretary, KN Sharma, Sikkim Kalakar Sangh president, Chunnilal Ghimirey and senior journalist KK Chettri as vice-presidents, Press Club of Sikkim president, Bhim Rawat, journalist Amber Gurung and social worker, Khangendra Dhakal as assistant-secretaries and social worker, Chandra Rai and poet Deepa Rai as treasurer.

Meanwhile, journalists Nirmal Mangar, Bishal Gurung, Prakash Adhikari, Jagan Dahal and Yougen Tamang have been appointed as media cell in-charge and former Members of Parliament, Pahalman Subba and Sikkim University lecturer, Dr Pushpa Sharma nominated as advisors.

Likewise, senior advocates KT Bhutia and Yangjay Pinase will assist the committee on legal issues.

The committee has members from different sections of the society as executive members.

The committee also passed various resolutions in support of the Gorkhaland movement in Darjeeling and has decided to hold a meeting on 20 June to decide the future strategies and programme.
