Sikkim University Students's Association (SUSA) has accused the Human Resources Development Department of not following proper norms in recruiting Assistant Professors in the Government Colleges of Sikkim.
The official notice [Memo.No. 126/Dir(HE)/HRDD, dated-24/06/2017] issued by HRDD states that interview notified in Memo. No. 93/ Dir(HE)/HRDD, dated-15/06/2017 stands cancelled and it has been decided to appoint the candidates as per merit on the basis of their marks obtained in the Post Graduation (PG) level.
"By considering only the marks of PG as a sole criterion for the post of Assistant Professor (be it in ad-hoc basis), HRDD has invited criticism. It suggests that this most important educational Department gives less priority to higher degrees like M.Phil, Ph.D. and candidates with NET/SLET certificates," reads the press release issued by the students union.
It also held that the marks of PG can be considered as one of the criteria but not the sole criterion to select a candidate.
It further adds that the marks in PG do not define the person’s teaching ability and skills. For recruitment of Graduate Teachers in Schools, there are criteria like Bachelors in Education (B.Ed) and Teachers Eligibility Test (TET).
"Candidates with Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D)/ Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)/National Eligibility Test/State Level Eligibly Test must be prioritized as well as an interview," said SUSA president, Patrush Lepcha.
He also said that teaching is a noble profession and Assistant Professor is a reputed post even if it is on adhoc basis, therefore, it demands a proper recruitment system so that the students get better lecturers, otherwise the future of the young generation of Sikkim is at stake.
"This is a humble request from students to the higher authorities of HRDD to reconsider this decision and to conduct fair interview with proper criteria and guidelines for the betterment of students of different colleges of Sikkim and for the future of Sikkim as a whole," he said.
