Landslide near new Secretariat disrupts water supply in Gangtok
Gangtok, 22 Jul:
A landslide that occurred below the under construction Secretariat building in Gangtok at around 5.30 p.m. on 21 Julyhas damaged the 600 ft long water pipeline that fills the zonal tank and consumer lines to Deorali, Namnang, Lal Bazaar, New Market, Kazi Road, Tadong, Lingding, Lumsey and Central Referral Hospital. Hence, it is informed that the water supply to the aforementioned areas will be disrupted till restoration work is completed.
Officials of Disaster Management department informed thata new protective wall was being erected and road widening work was under progress on the road towards RMDD premises. The old [existing] wall below the new wall collapsed due to incessant rainfall as a result of which the entire under construction wall along with the road was damaged.
The landslide has also caused damage to the Mines and Geology Department building located just below the site of the incident with mudslide entering the ground floor of the building that served as the laboratory of the department and a tree landing on its roof.
Forest Department personnel along with Quick Response Team of Disaster Management Department and civil rescue personnel have been working on clearing the fallen tree and the debris.
The PHE officials stated that all restoration works are being carried out on a war footing to restore the damaged pipeline. They have appealed to the public to cooperate with the department as there will be inconvenience caused for a few days.
Temporary measures are also being looked into so that the supply of water continues eve if in reduced quantityto all the areas that the tank connects to.
It is informed that the PHE department has closed the water supply of the damaged pipeline in order to avoid further damage.
