Press Club of Sikkim condemns sealing of ABN office

Gangtok, 25 Jul:

The Press Club of Sikkim, on behalf of the media fraternity of Sikkim, has expressed shock over the sealing of the office of ABN Network, a Nepali TV channel, in Siliguri by the West Bengal police on 23 July.

“The channel has been singled out and targeted for airing the voices of the people especially its extensive reportage of the Gorkhaland statehood agitation. Every channel and newspaper had similar coverage. After curtailing the common people of the Darjeeling hills from mobile and internet services, it is extraordinary that the media is fettered in this manner,” a PCS statement on the issue reads.

PCS has condemned the action arguing that the “restriction shows an emergency like attitude of the West Bengal government”.

“It not only cripples the freedom of expression but also questions the very soul of democracy,” it adds.

The Press Club of Sikkim has appealed to the West Bengal administration, Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Press Council of India to ensure that there is free flow of information in the region.
