Kumar Sporting Club joins Renzong in promotion to Second Division
Gangtok, 28 Jul:
Renzong Football Club has emerged champion of the Sikkim Football Association C-Division Sikkim League played here at Paljor Stadium. In a nail-biting final match of the league today, Renzong FC edged past Kumar Sporting Club 2-1 to lift the champions’ trophy.
Both finalists have now been promoted to the second division Sikkim League.
It may be recalled that Renzong FC reached the finals defeating Sadarian Football Club in the semifinal, while Kumar SC moved past Manik Football Club to play in the finals today.
Despite both teams having already been promoted to the Second Division, they still played delightfully competitive football today. The pride of moving to the next division as toppers of the league proved a strong motivation.
The teams played neck-to-neck from the first minute of the match itself, opting for an attacking game from both ends.
Sairash Tamang scored an early lead for Kumar SC in the 9th minute itself, but Pel Rai scored the equaliser for Renzong FC in the 35th minute.
Kumar SC received a golden chance to take the lead again in the form of penalty kick in the first half, but its player, Bishal Tamang, missed the net and the first half ended with the score level at 1-1.
The second half also seemed to be ending similarly until the referee offered a penalty shot to Renzong FC in the 81st minute for a handball by a Kumar SC defender in the D-box area.
Renzong FC captain, Chunku Sherpa, converted the penalty kick into the winning goal.
Although the match and the trophy went to Renzong FC, Cyrus Khawas of Kumar SC was adjudged the man of the match.
The final match had Rajya Sabha MP, Hishey Lachungpa, as chief guest, accompanied by Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, SD Dhakal, as guest of honour. The final match was also witnessed by former Indian football team skipper, Bhaichung Bhutia, and international footballer, Nirmal Chettri.
The chief guest and other guests handed over the medals and trophies to both the teams.
32 teams had participated in the C-Division league and were divided into eight pools for the league round. The topper of each group and last year’s relegated team, Manik FC, entered the knock-out round of the league which concluded today.
