Singtam, 10 Aug:
While markets in Gangtok and Mangan have been provided with stalls for organic farmers of the areas, villagers from in and around Singtam still do not have space in the town to sell their produce. One such villager is a senior citizen who is commonly known as 'Bari'. She comes all the way from Pendam to sell organic vegetables in Singtam Bazaar and often ends up facing the wrath of people.
“I come to Singtam in an interval of two days from Pendam and select a location here, mostly outside shops. Sometimes I get yelled at by the owners for setting up my stall outside their shops so I have to search for another place. I have no other option,” says Bari.
The Haat Ghar in the town is mostly occupied, leaving organic farmers hopping from one spot to another in order to sell their products.
