TWO UNDER TRIALS ESCAPE NAMCHI PRISON THROUGH TUNNEL


Namchi, 02 Sept:

Two under trial inmates who were under judicial custody at Namchi District Prison, South Sikkim staged a daring escape from the district prison this morning. The two escaped through a tunnel dug under the jail's walls.

Yogesh Bardewa (21) of Jarong, South Sikkim, was under judicial custody at Namchi prison from 11 Feb 2017 and Kishan Gurung (26) of Jaldhaka, Darjeeling district was in the prison from 29 Nov 2016. Both were booked under POSCO Act and the case is under trial at the District Session Court Namchi.

SP Jail, SK Shresta informed that the jail personnel found the two inmates missing at 6:40 a.m. this morning when they were carrying out their usual counting of inmates. On enquiry it was learnt that the two had been sent to dispose of garbage and had not returned thereafter.

Jail authorities immediately started a search operation and found a tunnel dug under the jail's wall through which the duo had escaped. A complaint has been filed at Namchi PS and search is on to trace the duo.

As per the SP, all check posts in the border towns of Sikkim have been alerted and search operation is underway. He also said that due to continuous rainfall the soil under the walls had become pliable and the two prisoners took advantage of this managing to dig a tunnel under the wall.
