Scrub typhus has claimed six lives in West Sikkim
Gangtok, 12 Sept:
Six people have reportedly died due to scrub typhus in the State so far. As per the state government, only two of these deaths are 'laboratory confirmed' deaths while the rest are suspected to have died due to scrub typhus. All cases reported thus far come from West Sikkim.
Till August, 12 cases of scrub typhus were reported in West Sikkim. While 101 cases of suspected scrub typhus were reported, only 12 tested positive for the disease.
Meanwhile, the Health Department has begun spreading awareness on scrub typhus in all the districts. Information regarding the outbreak of scrub typhus has been sent to the Center Surveillance Unit and the State Surveillance Unit of the Health Department is in touch with CSU Delhi.
Districts, PHCs and PHSCs have been directed to remain vigilant on reporting of fever cases while suspected cases are to be tested for scrub typhus and early treatment of individual is advised.
Testing facilities for scrub typhus are available in PHC, District Hospital and STNM Hospital.
