Partha Chakra last team to enter semis of Governor's Gold Cup

Despite an impressive game, the young squad of Indian Army [Red] went down to Partha Chakra, Kolkata in the last quarter-final match of the ongoing 37th All India Governor’s Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2017 here at Paljor Stadium today. Partha Chakra edged past Indian Army [Red] 4-3 to secure its berth in the semi-final round of the tournament.
In the 16th minute of the match, the referee offered a penalty kick to Indian Army for a foul by Partha Chakra defender in D-box area. N Suresh Meitei successfully converted the spot kick into a lead for Indian Army. However, the Army team could hold the lead for a long time when Eric PB netted the direct free-kick in the 21st minute equalizing the score. The first half ended in 1-1 draw.
Soon in the second half, Eric PB completed his brace in the 53rd minute and soon his teammate, Alex Whittemore extended the lead of Partha Chakra to 4-1 with his brace in the 56th and 68th minute.
When Army players were struggling hard to bounce back in the match, the referee offered them another penalty shot for a foul in Partha Chakra D-box area in the 83rd minute. N Suresh Meitei completed his brace by successfully converting the penalty kick into a second goal for Army. An Army substitute player, Pranay Rai, gave further hope to the team with his beautiful goal in the 86th minute. The young squad of Army played their hearts out to equalize the score but could not net further goals.
With the final whistle by the referee, Partha Chakra became the last team to enter the semi-final round of the tournament with this 4-3 win.
The first semi-final match of the tournament will be played between Mohun Bagan AC and ONGC Mumbai on 13 Oct at 2:30 p,m.
