Sensitization workshop held on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act

The National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, Mumbai,in collaboration with Social Justice, Empowerment & Welfare Department, organized a daylong sensitization workshop on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016at the conference hall of SamajKalyanBhawan inTadong today with Chairperson of State Welfare Commission,IndraPradhan, as chief guest.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, it may be recalled, replaces the Persons with Disabilities [Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation] Act, 1995. It aims to fulfill the country’s obligation to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities [UNCRPD] to which India is a signatory.The Act came into force from Dec 2016.
Addressing the inaugural session,MsPradhan thanked the organizers for conducting the sensitization workshop.
“We should always be compassionate towards people with disabilities and not marginalize them. We have to help them get into the mainstream of our society. They are no less than anyone of us. All they require is little encouragement and love from us,” MsPradhan added.
She also expressed that many changes are still required to support such individuals by making all public and government establishments, educational institutions, etc., disabilities-friendly.
The inaugural session also had Head of Department-National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, Mumbai, R Bhattacharyya, addressing the gathering wherein he highlighted about “the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016”.
During the technical session, resource persons for the event spoke about understanding the Act and its proper implementation.
The nodal officers from the line departments, stakeholders and representatives of various NGOs attended the workshop and also participated in an open discussion.
