Health Dept condemns allegations of lack of pediatrician at Namchi Hospital

Gangtok, 05 Jan:

State Health Department has issued a clarification regarding a post on social media alleging that there is no child specialist at Namchi District Hospital, South Sikkim.

The department has said that Dr Birendra Gurung, Pediatrician was posted in the district hospital since several years until he was transferred to STNM Hospital in Gangtok a few days back. The department has gone on to clarify that Dr Birendra Gurung has been replaced by Dr CK Nepal, Pediatrician who joined Namchi District Hospital on 05 Jan 2018.

“This is a mischievous attempt to give misinformation to discredit the Health Department and Namchi Hospital in particular and this is highly condemnable,” the release reads.

The department further informs that there are 22 specialists posted at Namchi Hospital.

“The Government has recently enhanced the present doctor’s cadre strength in STNM Hospital from 305 to 626 with 325 posts of medical officers and 301 posts of specialists,” informs the release.

The department has said that health has always been a priority of the State Government with the department referring 400 patients to higher specialized centers in the last six months and sanctioning of Rs 05 crore by the State Government under Mukhya Mantri Jan Raksha Kosh [MMJRK]
