Hishey Lachungpa bags second term in RS unopposed
Gangtok, 08 Jan:
Sikkim Democratic Front’s Hishey Lachungpa was today officially declared as elected to the Rajya Sabha from Sikkim unopposed. Today was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers. Since Mr Lachungpa did not withdraw his papers – no surprises there – and since no other independent or party candidate was fielded for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, Mr Lachungpa now begins a second term representing Sikkim in the Upper House of the Parliament.
His return to the Parliament was formalized here at the Sikkim Legislative Assembly today with the Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha elections in Sikkim, LM Pradhan, handing him the election certificate.
The special function was also attended by Deputy Speaker, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, who was also nominated the special observer for the RS elections in Sikkim the Election Commission of India and the State’s Chief Electoral Officer Tenzing Golay. Also in attendance were GMC chairperson Ashish Rai, Gangtok Mayor Shakti Singh and officials engaged with the election process.
Speaking to SummitTimes as he received the congratulations of supporters and well-wishers, Mr Lachungpa reiterated that he was faithful party worker and honoured by the responsibility shouldered on him a second time to represent Sikkim in the Rajya Sabha.
He thanked his party president, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, allowing him to continue serving Sikkim in Parliament and stated that he would continue to work in close coordination with his Lok Sabha colleague from Sikkim to pursue Sikkim’s pending issues with the Centre and the Ministries there.
