Motor Vehicles Dept observes 29th Road Safety Week

Motor Vehicles Department, North Sikkim observed 29th Road Safety Week here at Mangan in North Sikkim today with Sub Divisional Magistrate, Mangan, PW Lepcha, as chief guest.
Also present were Senior Regional Transport Officer, KS Gurung, Senior Superintendent of Police [North], Karma T Bhutia, and Assistant Superintendent of Police [North], Eden Subba, along with members of Truck Drivers’ Association, Mainline Taxi Drivers’ Association and other officials.
Senior RTO, Mr Gurung, talked about road safety measures and urged all to be careful and practical. Enforcement, engineering and licensing are the common factors that should be focused on to avoid road accidents, he added.
He also urged drivers to approach the department in case of any grievance. He added that drivers are responsible for the lives of many.
The RTO further appealed to all the stake holders to maintain valid documents and proper fitness of the vehicles.
Senior SP [North], Mr Bhutia, encouraged the department to organize the weeklong awareness camp annually and urged the drivers to be disciplined.
Likewise, Additional SP, Ms Subba, informed that vehicles are being challaned if the documents are found incomplete which is for the safety of everyone. She further stressed that TAAS and travel agents should monitor the condition of the vehicles before sending tourists for tours.
Sub Divisional Magistrate, Mangan, in his address, said that drivers should be very cautious while driving and should avoid using cell phones and tape recorders while on the wheel.
During an interaction session, the representative of Drivers’ Association requested for installation of zebra crossing in different spots at Mangan Bazaar for commuters and school students.
A rally was also conducted from Mangan Nagar Panchayat Bhawan to Bus Dara in Mangan.
