Under the aegis of ‘Artists of Namchi’,a musical evening, ‘Tribute to Late Rahul Rai,’ was organised at Central Park inNamchi on 23 Mar.
The event was dedicated to the frontman of acoustic band, ‘Tribal Rain’, who passed away on 14 Feb. Rahul was one of the most popular and celebrated singers from Sikkim. His death had delivered a huge shock to lot of his fans and well-wishers in the State, country and abroad.
The Artists of Namchi initiated the event to pay heartfelt tribute to the singer Preparations had begun a few weeks back and the event was planned as a platform for upcoming singers and musicians of Sikkim.
Speaking to SummitTimes, one of the organisers, YogeshRai, said, “To not have Rahulamongst us today is a big loss forthe music fraternity of Sikkim. His demise has created a vacuum in the music scene in the entire Nepali music fraternity,even the industry of the country one might say. His music was different, soulful and inspiring. Thus, organising this event to pay tribute to him is not just to express our love for him and his music, but also to let people know how deep Rahul was into music and how he inspired so many of us.”
Another artist from Namchi,ThupdenBhutia, expressed, “This tribute to Rahul Rai is not organised to say to the world that we lost him, but to let people know how Rahul’s music had touched everyone of us and motivated us to follow our music passionately and seriously. It is to pay respect, gratitude and admiration to him and his music. Rahul will always live amongst us through his music.”
Twenty two performances where staged during the event with solo artists, rappers, beat boxers and numerous bands.
In an emotional turn, the band ‘Tribal Rain’ also performed for the first time in Sikkim since the assing away of its frontman. The band performed songs which were written and composed by Rahul for his second album that is yet to be released.
The event was attended by Principal, New Light Academy,DrLobsang Lama, as chief guest accompanied by Advisor, Food and Civil Supplies Department, Government of Sikkim,SatishRai, and Panchayat, Turuk,YogenRai.
Rahul’s parents, Padma Rai and Naya Kumar Rai, were also present during the event. They expressed their gratitude to the Artists of Namchi for organising the event. They also spoke about Rahul’s brief life and the passion that drove him.
