Centre has granted permission for Karmapa visit to Sikkim claim SKM-BJP

Gangtok, 29 Mar:

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha [SKM] and Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] state unit today claimed that the Centre has granted permission to the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje to visit Sikkim. However, no official announcement has come from the State or the Centre so far.

Sangha MLA of SKM, Sonam Lama, released a video online early this morning announcing that the Centre has allowed Karmapa to visit Sikkim barring Rumtek. He thanked the Cabinet Committee on Security, Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister of State, Kiran Rijiju, amongst others.

SKM, in a press release, also credited this development to the "continuous efforts and special initiatives of SKM Sangha MLA, Sonam Lama, and 630 days of relay hunger strike by monks."

Meanwhile, a BJP release states that they contacted the Union Home Ministry and were informed that the Karmapa has been allowed to visit the State.

The party has further said that the BJP State unit along with Sangha MLA, Sonam Lama, Denzong Lhadey organisation and others pressed the demand to the Union Home Minister of State on his visit to Sikkim on 21 Jun last year.

It may also be mentioned that the most recent effort of the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on the issue was on 20 Mar when he had written to External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, seeking permission for the 17th Karmapa’s Ogyen Trinley Dorje to visit the state.
