Labour Dept Secretary inspects Temi Tea Estate

A team led by Labour Department Secretary, LP Chettri made an inspection visit of the different ongoing construction sites at Temi Tea Estate in South Sikkim on Saturday.
The department has allocated Rs 1.5 crore under Sikkim Building and Other Construction Board scheme to construct infrastructures such as lunch shed, crèche, changing room, and field based rest shed, for the welfare of the workers.
"We are happy with the progress of the work. The inspection was to ensure that the allocated fund was being properly utilized. We interacted with the workers and they are very happy with the added new infrastructures," said Mr Chettri.
The crèche for the women workers in the tea estate is the first in Sikkim. Similar projects will be implemented in other areas with the approval from the board, it was informed.
A woman worker, Sushma Rai, said, "We faced lots of problems with lack of basic facilities such as toilet and lunch shed. Earlier we used to eat and defecate in an open space."
The Manager, LD Bhutia, stated that the added infrastructure would add new enthusiasm amongst the workers.
"We are grateful to the Chief Minister and the department for approving the fund for the betterment of the workers," he added.
