BJP welcomes Organic idea, questions delivery
Gangtok, 01 Apr:
BharatiyaJanta Party’s Sikkim unit has appreciated the efforts of the State Government towards organic farming. The party, through a press release, has said that the Central Government led by Prime Minister NarendraModi has been encouraging other States in the country to look up to Sikkim in its commitment towards organic farming.
However, the release mentions that the State has been witnessinglow participation from the Sikkimese people in agriculture and animal husbandry, contending that most lands are occupied by private companies from outside the State.
The release adds that lack of proper irrigation systems and water scarcity in some remote areas of the State present worrisome challenges to meet the demands of organic vegetables.
The release adds that while enquiring with lay people and hawkers, the BJP state-unit found that they were in panic-mode due to the sudden ban with possibility of price hike if vegetablesfrom outside are not allowed into the State.
The party has also questioned the State Government whether all the vegetables produced in the State are organic certified.
The party has further alleged that the concerned department is not helping local farmers and some certification agencies are providing organic certification without any parameters.
On the same, the party has alleged that the State is just advertising organic farming without actually engaging in it.
