HPV vaccination against cervical cancer to start from June in West Sikkim

The first meeting of District Task Force Immunization (DTFI) on Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination for West District was organized by District Health Society here at Bhanu Salig, Kyongsa today.

The meeting commenced under the chairmanship of District Collector-cum-Chairperson (DTFI), Kapil Meena.

TN Bhutia present as a resource person said that under the visionary leadership of the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling this noble cause has been started in our state at the state's cost. This vaccine will save many of our girl children from getting cervical cancer and Sikkim is the second state to include HPV vaccination after Punjab who has already started doing this in their 2 districts only.

The target age group for the vaccination is 9 years to less than 14 years and the campaign will start as a trial from 1st week of June 2018. The initial one week vaccination will cover all schools and educational institutes and the 2nd week will be focused on drop out children or children who do not go to schools along with the HPV vaccination certificate/card, he added.

Mr Bhutia informed that 45.3 crore women are at the risk of cervical cancer and it is estimated that there are 132,000 new cases each year. It is also estimated that 70,000 deaths among women are due to cervical cancer (25% of global mortality). One woman dies of cervical cancer approximately every 8 minutes in India.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Thinlay Wongyal CMO (W), Ongdila Bhutia (Zilla Panchayat), ADC (Dev), J.D (HRDD), CDPO (ICDS), SDMs, BDOs and various other officials.
