Inaugural Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Jayanti football tourney kicks off

Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Department, RB Subba inaugurated the first ever Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Football Tournament 2018 today here at Paljor Stadium.

Organised by All Sikkim Scheduled Caste Welfare Association [ASSCWA], the tourney aims to provide aspiring footballers a platform to showcase their skills. The association further announced that they will conduct the football tournament every year.

ASSCWA president, Shekhar Sewa, said that the association had plans to celebrate Dr Ambedkar Jayanti in a grand manner this year but opted to organize the football tournament instead.

Fourteen teams from Sikkim, Kalimpong, Jaigaon and Nepal have registered themselves in the tournament to win the inaugural Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Football Tournament trophy.

The tourney kicked off with Young Orchid taking on Brotherhood Football Club where the former beat Young Orchid 4-2.

The organizing committee also announced that the final match of the tourney will be held on 14 Apr and will be attended by Indian Super League football player, Komal Thatal and other national footballers from Sikkim.

Addressing the inaugural day of the tournament, chief guest Mr Subba spoke about the contributions made by Dr Ambedkar to safeguard the rights of minorities. He applauded the ASSCWA for organizing the event and urged the players to display camaraderie and the spirit of sportsmanship.

The programme was also attended by Gangtok MLA, Pintso Chopel, Sikkim Football Association president, Menla Ethenpa, Additional Director General of Police, Akshay Sachdeva and other officials.

Winning team of the inaugural Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Football Tournament will be receiving Rs 1 lakh while the runner up team will be awarded Rs 70,000.
