Four persons were killed in a road mishap today at Lachung in North Sikkim when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged off the road at Chumpyong-kyong between Phaka and Thomsi at around 8:30 AM.
The Mahindra Maxx vehicle, bearing registration number SK-03J-0209, was plying towards Leyma from Lachung ferrying labourers.
The deceased in the mishap are: driver Lakpa Sherpa, 45, and three ladies Doma Sherpa, Kamala Sherpa and Mingma Bhutia, all of whom died on the spot. The ladies were all residents of Nepal currently engaged as labourers in Lachung.
A total of 12 persons were on-board the ill-fated vehicle at the time of the accident.
The eight injured passengers have been referred to STNM Hospital, Gangtok. They are, Sanjeet Subba of Nepal, Lhamu Bhutia of Sarchok, Mingma Doma Sherpa of Dentam, Namgyal Bhutia of Khamdong, Phurba Lhamu Sherpa of Sombarey, Samjana Chettri of Chupaka, Dawa Rai of Nepal and Dawa Doma Sherpa from Kalimgpong, West Bengal.
The autopsy of the fatalities was conducted at the District hospital here.
It may be mentioned here that one person was killed at the same spot last year when a Mahindra Xylo met with an accident there.
