Air-conditioned coach added to DHR

Gangtok, 13 Apr:

A new air-conditioned coach has been added to the New Jalpaiguri-Darjeeling narrow-gauge passenger train, an official press communiqué from Indian Railways informs.

This is the first instance in India of a narrow gauge railway having air-conditioned coaches. Now, the train will have two First Class coaches and one Air-conditioned coach with the capacity to seat 15 persons. The first class coach accommodates 18

The fare for the NJP-Darjeeling ride in the air-conditioned coach has been fixed at Rs. 1,555 per person.

Passengers can book tickets through any Computerised Passenger Reservation system counter anywhere in the country and also online through the IRCTC website for railway e-tickets, it is further informed.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, it may be recalled, was recently re-modelled at an approximate cost of about Rs. 43 lakh. Apart from installing air-conditioners, many other features have been added to the remodelled coaches. Now, the coaches have bigger and wider windows so that a visitor to the hills can have better view, a music system that can play local music or radio, ergonomic and comfortable seats, a new improved design toilet, emergency battery back-up and announcement system.

The NJP-Darjeeling Passenger leaves New Jalpaiguri everyday at 8.30 AM and reaches Darjeeling at 03.35 pm. In the reverse direction, Darjeeling-New Jalpaiguri Passenger leaves Darjeeling at 08.15 AM to reach New Jalpaiguri at 03.10 pm.

Currently, one more narrow-gauge passenger train runs between Kurseong and Darjeeling.

For tourists, nine other Joy Ride trains are run between Ghum and Darjeeling. Six of them are hauled by steam engines and the rest by diesel engines.
