SLA conducts State level inter college debate competition


Gangtok, 18 Apr:

State level inter-college debate competition was held here at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok today.

Organised by Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat as a part of the Best Legislator Award function, the competition had participants from Government colleges from all four districts.

The results of the competition will be declared on 26 April during the Best Legislator Award Ceremony.

The first, second and third position winners will be awarded with cash prize of Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively along with certificates and trophies.

The function today was attended by Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), PD Rai as the chief guest. He was accompanied by Deputy Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha and former Speaker Kalawati Subba and KT Gyaltsen.

Members of the selection committee of the Best Legislator Award were also present on the occasion.

The final round of the State level debate competition on ‘Climate Change Debate - A Challenge For Legislators’ had 20 finalists from different colleges of the State.

Sikkim Government Law College, Sikkim Government College Tadong, SGC Burtuk, SGC Gyalshing, SGC Mangshila, SGC Namchi, SGC Chakhung, SGC Rhenock and Sikkim Institute of Higher Ningma Studies were among the participating colleges.

Students from Deorali Girls School, West Point Senior Secondary School, Enchey SSS, Tadong SSS, Paljor Namgyal Girls SSS and Modern School also attended the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, Mr Rai congratulated the participants for being part of the event. He also congratulated the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat for coming up with a great initiative to organize the competition.

He urged the students to be well informed and talked on various topics.

He highlighted on various schemes and achievements of the State Government and expressed his happiness on being part of the programme.

Member of the Award Selection Committee and primary judge of the State level debate competition, KT Gyaltsen while addressing the function said that the event was fruitful and very informative.

He also gave a deliberation on the subject whilst appreciating the debater’s role in making the event more informative and exciting. He elaborately explained the various forms which encompass democracy and the freedom it gives to an individual.

The judges of the debate competition were retired Principal Director, Rudra Poudyal, Head of Political Science Department [Sikkim University], Durga Prasad Pradhan, Additional Director, Department of Science and Technology and Climate Change, DG Shreshta, and Principal Secretary, Forest and Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim, Thomas Chandy.

A video of MP, PD Rai raising concerns over climate change and environmental issues in the Parliament was also shown during the function.
