SPCB issues closure notices to 7 pharma laundries
GANGTOK, 23 Apr:
After the High Court of Sikkim hammered the State Pollution Control Board for negligence in taming the pharmaceutical industries and its allied companies, the Board has served closure notices to 07 laundries providing washing facilities to pharma companies across the state. This is the first time that the Board has taken such action.
The notices were served in the first week of April directing the ‘immediate closure’ of the laundries from the date of receipt of the notice. The laundries were engaged in washing protective suits worn by workers in the production units that are contaminated with highly toxic chemicals.
The seven laundries are M/s Sharmila Enterprises of Mining, Rangpo, M/s Rangeet Enterprises of Tarpin Rorathang, Shri Ram Sharma of Majitar, Rangpo, M/s Sparke Laundry of Lower Arithang, Gangtok, M/s Shristika Enterprises of Mamring, East Sikkim, M/s Teesta Enterprises of Mamring, East Sikkim, and M/s Teesta Impex Industrial Laundry, Namli near Ranipool.
These laundries have been accused of violating norms and providing washing facilities without having the required Effluent Treatment Plant and approval to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board.
Two laundries, M/s Sharmila Enterprises, M/s Teesta Impex Industrial Laundry had been approved for operation only for the year 2016-17. The rest five laundries are illegally functioning in total contravention of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 without any approval from the Board.
