NCW Chairperson calls on CM, applauds Sikkim's achievements
Gangtok, 24 Apr [IPR]:
Chairperson of National Commission for Women [NCW], Rekha Sharma, called on Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at his official residence in Mintokgang this evening.
Ms Sharma was accompanied by Member, NCW, Alok Rawat, NCW Coordinator, Lilabati, and Chairperson, Sikkim State Commission for Women [SSCW], Rehna Rai.
The NCW Chairperson congratulated the CM for his long tenure as the Chief Minister of Sikkim and commended the achievements made by Sikkim under his leadership. She shared her observations about the emphasis being laid on women's empowerment in the State through various women-friendly schemes and programmes and for the equal status enjoyed by women at par with men. She further praised the Organic Mission of the State and added that other States in the North East should replicate the unique practices and successful models of Sikkim.
Mr Chamling stated that women enjoy political and social freedom in the State and are empowered to take up any task. He informed that Sikkim passed the Succession Act way back in 2008 which reserves for women the right and privilege to inherit property. He also shared some of the environment-friendly initiatives of the state government.
He thanked the Chairperson and the visiting delegates for visiting Sikkim and for choosing the State for hosting the NE level conference.
Ms Sharma thanked the CM for the hospitality and warm welcome and reiterated that the Centre will continue to extend all possible support to the State to sustain the high standards of development it has set.
