United Brothers, Kalimpong, secured its berth in the semifinal round of the ongoing 2nd Mahendra Karki Memorial Invitational Football Tournament 2018. In a contesting quarterfinal match played today, a hattrick by Dewashish Rai helped United Brothers edge past the State Sports Academy 3-2.
Both the teams failed to capitalize some good opportunities to take an early lead in the match and the first half appeared to be headed for a goalless scoreboard until Amon Lepcha of SSA scored in the 37th minute and gave SSA the lead.
The deadlock broken, Dewashish Rai scored the equaliser soon after for United Brothers in the 44th minute and the first half ended evenly poised 1-1.
In the early minutes of the second half, Dewashish Rai completed his brace in the 48th minute and took the lead for United Brothers.
SSA boys played their hearts out to equalize, but could not net any goals.
In the meantime, Dewahish Rai completed his hattrick in the 85th minute to further extend the lead for United Brothers to 3-1.
Sanjay Rai managed to bring the stadium to its feet with his goal in the 87th minute to bring SSA closer, but it was too late to stop the guest team from entering the semifinal round of the tournament and the match ended 3-2 in favour of United Brothers.
