East completes verification of EVMs & VVPATs
Gangtok, 25 Apr:
Physical verification of Electronic Voting Machines [EVMs] and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail [VVPATs] was conducted under the supervision of District Election Officer, East district from 21-25 Apr at the EVM warehouse located at the office premises of the Chief Electoral Officer in Baluwakhani, Gangtok.
A press release received from the District Collectorate, East, informs that the EVM warehouse was opened in the presence of Sub Divisional Magistrate, Gangtok, representatives of political parties, Under Secretary [Election], East, election officials on 21 Apr at 11 am.
The representatives of political parties were briefed on the purpose behind online verification of EVMs and VVPATs using mobile app. They were also explained the compulsory use of VVPATs in future elections across the country as a mandatory directive of the Election Commission of India.
The political parties were also invited to witness the process of verification if they desired. Some of the political parties have visited the warehouse on different days during the verification process, the release adds.
A total of 1,020 EVMs and 40 VVPATs were verified and updated online, thus completing the process of verification.
The EVM warehouse was closed in the presence of Additional District Collector, East [Headquarter], SDM, Gangtok, representatives of political parties and the election officials of East district.
