Motor Vehicle Division, Gangtok, today organized National Road Safety Week 2018 with the theme “Sadak Surakcha-Jeewan Raksha” at Dikchu Senior Secondary School in East Sikkim.
Highlighting the importance of road safety, Assistant Regional Transport Officer, Phurba Wangyal Bhutia, stated that road accidents have been reduced to 6% as compared to the 2016 ratio. He urged students to take precautions while crossing the road and travelling in a vehicle.
Similarly, Sub Inspector, Traffic, Sukra Hang Subba, delivered tips on road crossing and encouraged all to use zebra crossings and to take precautions while boarding and disembarking a vehicle. He also stressed on the importance of wearing proper helmets while riding two wheelers.
Deputy RTO, Motor Vehicle Division, JB Thapa, informed about the common causes of road accidents and its consequences which leads to grievous injuries and death as well. He also appealed to people to help rescue victims during accidents.
An essay competition was also conducted during the event on “Awareness regarding traffic rules” followed by a 1 KM rally on road safety awareness which had the participation of students of Dikchu SSS.
It may be mentioned here, the Motor Vehicle Division is observing Road Safety Week 2018 from 23-30 Apr.
