District officials of North Sikkim today discussed issues related to monsoon preparedness including disaster management plans during a co-ordination meeting that was chaired by District Magistrate, North, Karma R Bonpo, at Zilla Panchayat Bhawan in Mangan today.
Delivering the keynote address, the DM North while focusing on road conditions, inquired about different troubled zones in the district to which the representatives of Roads & Bridges Department and BRO explained developments in detail.
Mr Bonpo stated that the PMGSY roads are also to be maintained and urged the concerned officials to undertake proper monitoring of road blockages so that it takes minimum time for their restoration.
He further directed the District Civil Supplies Officer [DCSO], North to look into the feasibility of opening one petrol pump in Chungthang.
Early warning systems, flood relief measures, checking the readiness of equipment and communication systems, advance procurement of necessary relief materials, community-based disaster management and coordinated approach for disaster response at the district level were highlighted during the meeting.
Mr Bonpo also informed that concerted efforts from all have helped in minimizing various problems in the district.
“The emergency stocks of essential commodities for Mantam should be for at least three months as the temporary bridge at Mantam will be de-launched owing to monsoon,” he added.
The need for coordination among all the Central and State government agencies was re-emphasized. The conference was convened primarily to review the status of preparedness in dealing with any natural disaster that may occur in the district.
Identification of nodal officer and contact number updation, mitigation of Mantam Lake, maintenance of highway from Rang Rang to Mangan Bazaar were also discussed by the officials.
Project developers were also asked about their safety measures in their respective project areas.
