LD Kazi Gold Cup nearing final round Winners to participate in Subroto Cup tourney in Oct


Gangtok, 04 May:

A total of 78 senior secondary schools and 116 secondary schools of the State have participated in the Late LD Kazi Memorial Gold Cup State Level Inter School Boys & Girls Football Tournament 2018 being organised by Sports & Youth Affairs Department in collaboration with Human Resource Development Department, Government of Sikkim.

The preliminary rounds of the tournament were held at the BAC level from 20-30 Apr at different parts of the State and the selected schools are presently competing in the district-level at their respective district headquarters.

The district-level matches began on 01 May and are scheduled to conclude on 05 May.

The top-16 schools in boys’ and girls’ categories from the district-level will be playing in the final round of the tournament. The final round for boys’ football will be held from 09-18 May at Chakung School ground while the girls’ football will be held from 23-31 May at Soreng School ground in West Sikkim.

This was informed by Additional Director of Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Kamal Chettri, in a press conference here in the capital today.

He mentioned that the main objective of the tournament was to inculcate a sense of professionalism among school students and to provide a better platform to large number of boys and girls to encourage and motivate their talents and take them to national and international levels.

He informed that 6208 students from 194 schools of the State have participated in this edition of the tournament. The defending champions are Namchi Senior Secondary School in boys’ and Dentam SSS in girls’ categories. The tournament carries along cash prizes of Rs 50,000 to winners and Rs 30,000 to runners-up team in both the categories.

Mr Chettri further informed that the champion school of the tournament will be representing Sikkim in the prestigious Subroto Mukherjee International Football Tournament to be held in Delhi.

“There teams from Sikkim that will be participating in Subroto Mukherjee International Football Tournament in Oct this year which includes U-17 Boys, U-17 Girls and U-14 Boys team of Namchi Sports Hostel,” he added.

He informed that the winning boys’ team of the tourney have been participating in Subroto Cup since 2015 and winning girl’s team and U-14 team of NSH participated in this tournament from last year.

“The main intention is to complete the State-level tournament within May to provide rigorous coaching camp for around four months for the winning teams under experienced coaches to prepare them well for the upcoming Subroto Cup,” Mr Chettri informed.

He also shares the plan of the department to start an inter-school competition in football and other disciplines at BAC level after completion of the LD Kazi tournament to provide equal opportunity and exposure to rural students and to prepare them for the prestigious National School Games.
