Thupden Kunga Bhutia Table Tennis Tourney commences at White Hall

The fifth edition of Thupden Kunga Bhutia Memorial East District Inter School & Open Table Tennis Tournament 2018 has started here at White Hall complex in Gangtok today. The three-day tournament is being organised by Sikkim Table Tennis Academy, Tadong.
The tournament was inaugurated by Additional Director of Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Kamal Chettri, this morning. He encouraged young paddlers to give their best efforts and practice continuously with a target to reach national and international levels.
The inaugural function was followed by the commencement of matches in the tournament. More than 80 paddlers from eight schools and different parts of East Sikkim are participating in the tournament. The finals of the tournament will be played on 06 May.
State Table Tennis Coach, Norden Bhutia, thanked Sikkim Table Tennis Academy, Tadong for providing platform to local players through such tournaments to encourage young upcoming paddlers.
He stated that the present fraction in Sikkim Table Tennis Association has affected the young upcoming players of the State.
“There is no State level and other tournaments in the State and our players have not been able to participate in national tournaments since last year. The lack of tournaments has mainly affected our young upcoming players of the State,” he said.
He stated that no initiative and action has been taken and if this continues, then it will greatly affect the development and promotion of table tennis in the State.
“In such a scenario, this is a highly appreciable initiative taken by Sikkim Table Tennis Academy for providing better platform to local young players,” the coach said.
