Nationalist Sikkim United Organisation [NSUO] has announced plans to organize its second observance of Samjhauta Diwas to commemorate the signing of the 8th May 1973 Tripartite Agreement in Sikkim on 08 May here at Bhanu Park. NSUO has appealed to political and non-political organisations and people of Sikkim to be part of the event.
Addressing a press conference here today, NSUO coordinator, Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, mentioned that the Tripartite Agreement was a historic moment as the people of Sikkim were then allowed to participate for the first time in deciding the political future of Sikkim.
He added that the Agreement holds paramount importance for every Sikkimese.
“The Government of India refers to the terms and conditions of the 08th May Agreement while formulating policies and programmes for Sikkim even today,” he said.
He informed that the first edition of Samjhauta Diwas at Dhanukay in East Sikkim received encouraging response and was successful. He further informed that the first edition of the event passed four resolutions which were presented to the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and Home Secretary.
NSUO member, Passang Sherpa, added that the event was above any political ideology or agenda. He added that the proper knowledge about Article 371F of the Constitution of India and the 08th May Agreement will bring all political parties and people together on a common platform.
He added that the event has been targeted to educate the people about the 08th May Agreement and other issues properly.
It is informed that the event will have representatives from political and non-political organisations as key speakers.
They informed that the organisation has invited leaders of ruling and opposition parties to the event.
“If any political party or leader fails to participate, it will be deemed that they are against Sikkim and Sikkimese people,” they said.
