Workshop on Sustainable Waste Management Pathways kicks off in Gangtok

 Gangtok, 11 May:

Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) in collaboration with Rural Management and Development Department, Government of Sikkim and Zero Waste Himalaya kicked off its two-day workshop to discuss the issues of waste in Sikkim and other Himalayan States of the country, a press release informs.

The workshop is being participated by 60 delegates from 12 mountainous States of the country. The workshop is being organised as part of a series of events leading to World Environment Day (WED) which falls on 05 June with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

Zilla Adhyaksha, S.S Bokhim and Gangtok Municipal Corporation Mayor, Shakti Singh Chaudhary attended the kick-off function as the chief guest along with Special Secretary, Anil Raj Rai.

Harshad Barde from Pune shared various provisions of Solid Waste Management Rules and Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 mentioning that while there were many loopholes in the rules, it could surely be used to the advantage of the mountain States by drafting of city bye laws, and extended producer responsibility. Mr. Barde’s also gave a brief presentation on the segregation at source project being undertaken by Swacch for Pune Municipal Corporation covering over 2 lakh households.

The last session of the day had Member of Parliament [Lok Sabha], P.D Rai as a speaker who talked about waste in the context of Sustainable Development Goals. He mentioned that zero waste as a vision was achievable.

“We must work to increase our sphere for influence,” he added.

The workshop aims to decode the WED theme and introduce participants to plastic free campaigns from across the globe. Subsequently, another highlight of the workshop shall be the growing importance of Zero Waste and its fundamentals, reads the release. 

Pan-Himalayan Cleanup is also scheduled to take place on the 26 May where various organizations, schools, NGOs, government bodies and other stakeholders will be involved to clean polluted sites.
