Namchi, 12 May:
The fourth edition of two-day long Sikkim Himalayan Veteran Badminton Tournament 2018 kicked off from today here at Namchi Indoor Stadium.
Organised by Badminton Association of Namchi, the tournament is set to host participants from Darjeeling, Kalampong, Kurseong, Mirik, Siliguri and Sikkim.
The inaugural function of the tournament began with the hoisting of Badminton Association of Namchi flag by former Gorkha Territorial Administration councilor, Lopzang Lama who was present as the chief guest of the programme.
Mr Lama was accompanied by the executive members of Badminton Association of Namchi along with association members, Chairman, Ecclesiastical Board, Lakpa Ghishing, District Collector [South] Prabhakar Verma, Superintendent of Police [West] Tenzing Loden Lepcha and former District Collector [South], Raj Yadav.
BAN president, Sailesh Pradhan delivering his welcome speech thanked Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for developing the indoor gymnasium hall at Namchi.
“It has become an asset for sports enthusiasts and people to excel in indoor games and sports,” he added.
He also congratulated the CM in behalf of the people of Namchi and BAN members for becoming the longest serving CM of the country.
Lopzang Lama in his address applauded BAN for organising the event and encouraged the players to compete honestly. He further urged the BAN members to continue organizing such tournaments to motivate and help players find their passion in sports.
The tournament has various categories covering several age groups like 35+ men’s singles and doubles, 40+ men’s singles and doubles, 45+ men’s singles and doubles, 50+ men’s doubles and veteran mix doubles.
The final of the tournament is scheduled to be held tomorrow.
