Governor visits trout farm in Sreebadam
Gangtok, 15 May:
Governor Shriniwas Patil and First Lady, Rajanidevi Patil, visited trout farm located at Sreebadam in West Sikkim on 13 May during their three-daylong visit to West Sikkim recently. The farm is raised by a cooperative society involving six local farmers with assistance from State’s Fisheries Department and National Fisheries Development Board [NFDB], Government of India, a press communiqué received from Raj Bhavan informs.
During interaction with the Governor, the farmers informed that they had established the farm in 2011 with financial assistance from NFDB, Government of India and State Fisheries had sponsored the 1500 hatchlings each with feed. Later in 2016-17, NFDB had again sponsored tanks alongside financial assistance.
The produce from their farm are in high demand in Gangtok and Pelling where it fetches very good price. The farmer further added that the demand of the fish goes very high during the tourist season ensuring them a very good livelihood and income, they added.
The Governor expressed happiness for the initiatives taken by the local enterprising farmers. He urged more youths to join the farming which can be developed as hub in the locality and replicated elsewhere.
