State Forest Deptt and MOEF&CC conducts riverfront cleaning drive along Rani Khola
Ranipool, 15 May:
Department of Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India as a part of World Environment Day 2018 conducted a riverfront cleaning drive along Rani Khola and its adjoining streams today.
The cleanliness drive was flagged off by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Wildlife Warden, C.S Rao along with Deputy Mayor, Lhasey Doma and other senior officials from various departments.
The programme was followed by a rally from Ranipool town to Ranipool bridge which was participated by the students from Biraspati Parsai School and officials from line department.
The cleanliness drive is scheduled to go on till 05 June.
During the programme, Mr Rao informed that this year’s theme for World Environment Day will be ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
He also urged the government, industry, communities and individuals to come together and explore sustainable alternatives and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic polluting our rivers, jhora and roadside damaging human life and threatening human health.
“From such plastic clean-up drives in rivers, jhoras and public areas, Sikkim will now be leading the push to save our rivers and roadside areas. This way Sikkim can set an example worldwide,” he added.
