Freelance journalist based out of Rangpo, East Sikkim, Sanjay Agarwal, has been named for the Ram Patro Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism, a press release from Ram Patro Memorial Award Committee informs.
Since 2005, the Ram Patro Memorial Award Committee has been conferring the Award to the most promising journalist of the State in the memory of Ram Patro, the founding editor of Sikkim Express.
14 journalists working in Sikkim have been awarded the Ram Patro Memorial ‘Most Promising Journalist’ award so far, informs the release.
The selection committee in 2017 decided to extend its ambit to the neighboring regions of Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong. Accordingly, the name of the award was also changed to ‘Ram Patro Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism’.
Special Correspondent of The Telegraph based in Darjeeling, Vivek Chhetri was the first recipient of the Ram Patro Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism.
The committee has further announced to award the ‘Best Working Journalist in Sikkim Express and Himali Bela for 2017-18’ to Sub-Editor, Himali Bela, Arjun Piyush.
The award will be conferred to the winners in a function scheduled to be held on 24 May. Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister, Ugen T. Gyatso Bhutia is set to attend the function as chief guest with Political Editor, Hindustan Times, Vinod Sharma as guest of honour.
“We are pleased to have Sanjay Agarwal as the first recipient of the Ram Patro Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism. He is a prominent journalist of the State. He has displayed versatility in reporting for English, Hindi and Nepali newspapers published from both Sikkim and Siliguri. He has also shown that a journalist is not limited by his area and one can be prolific in news generation even from a small place,” said chairman of the Ram Patro Memorial Award Committee, CD Rai,
