70 drivers penalized for overcharging during surprise inspection

Gangtok, 23 May:

Around 70 vehicles were challaned by the East District Traffic Police in a crackdown on taxis over charging the passengers today.

The inspection was led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tashi Lendey, at 2nd Mile of JN Road towards Tsomgo and Bojoghari Phatak after complaints were received from passengers, mainly the tourists.

“The surprise checking began last week and today we challaned over 70 taxi drivers for overcharging," said a senior traffic police.

“The fare for the passenger taxis has been fixed by the Motor Vehicles Division of the State Transport Department. There are different rates for different routes and charging more than that invites penalization under Motor Vehicles Act,” officials explain.

Law enforcers are also keeping a tab on the drivers at Mainline Taxi Stand at Deorali here, it is informed.
