Sikkimese footballers meet CM


Gangtok, 23 May:

Football stars Sanju Pradhan, Robin Gurung and Komal Thatal called on Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at Namchi where is currently halted as part of his 32-day State-wide tour.

“Was an absolute pleasure to meet the Chief Minister,” wrote Sanju Pradhan on his Facebook page.

“Our meeting focused around football/ sports. The HCM gave us a patient hearing and his response was very positive. We are hopeful the future generations will benefit even more from the Government's sports specific policies. I also took this opportunity to compliment the HCM for his recent announcement of giving job reservation to sportspeople and annual financial grants to the sports clubs. Lastly we offered our congratulations to him on becoming the longest serving Chief Minister of the country,” he wrote in another post.

Later, speaking to media-persons over the phone, Sanju said that they asked the Chief Minister to sanction more infrastructure dedicated to sports in the State.

The three footballers suggested that physical education teachers should be appointed at junior high school level so that students can learn technical aspects of sports at an early age.

“It is beneficial for students if they get technical knowledge of sports at a young age and for this it will be great if Physical Education Teachers are there at junior schools also,” he said.

“The Chief Minister noted down what we had to say and proposed to work together with the government,” said Sanju.

It was a fruitful meeting, he said.

Similarly, football star Nirmal Chettri also met the Chief Minister during the Jan Samparak Abhiyan programme at Turuk, Melli constituency on 21 May.

Nirmal hails from Melli.

“Absolute honor meeting with the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri Pawan Kumar Chamling Sir during the Jann Sampark Abhiyan at Turuk, Melli Constituency. I congratulate HCM on becoming the longest serving Chief Minister of India,” wrote Nirmal in his Facebook page.

When contacted, Nirmal said he spoke briefly with the Chief Minister regarding development of sports in Sikkim.

“He was open to suggestions and said that he will invite all sportspersons for an interaction after completing his Jan Samparak Abhiyan,” he said.

He mentioned that all concerned authorities, sports associations and present and former sportsperson should come together for brainstorming on development of sports in Sikkim. A board of committee should be formed to take all inputs and suggestions which can be then submitted to the government, he said.

Nirmal also welcomed the announcement of the CM for job reservation to sports persons and annual grants to ‘A’ grade sports clubs. He said the concerned authorities and sports associations should come together to formulate proper guidelines so that deserving talents and clubs get the benefit from the State Government.
