SCA releases special postal cover commemorating first cricket match played in Sikkim

Gangtok, 24 May:

A special postal cover issued by India Post and Sikkim Cricket Association to commemorate the the 80th anniversary of the first cricket match played in Sikkim in 1938 was released in Gangtok today.

Forest Minister, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, was present as the chief guest along with Legal Advisor to the Chief Minister, KT Gyalsten, and Sikkim Post Master General, Amitabh Kharagwal, as special guests.

“With the release of this cover we want to commemorate this historical event and make the World Cricket followers and the people of Sikkim know that the Cricket in Sikkim is such old and also that the first cricket match to be played at the an altitude of 2,728 meters was played in Sikkim. Also, from the sale of this Special Cover we will be generating funds, which will be used in growth of Cricket in Sikkim’ said cricket philatelist and designer of the cover,” explained Roshan Prasad, a philatelist who had first broached the concept to SCA.

Post Master General, Mr Kharagwal, informed that the postal department is also planning to organize district and state level philatelic exhibitions.

Mr Gyalsten in his address said that the historic narrative will help promote Sikkim internationally. He also expressed his gratitude to SCA for promoting cricket in Sikkim and assured to lend his support to the association.

Mr Lepcha in his address said, “It is a proud moment not only for Sikkim but also to the people of Sikkim as the event has been inscribed as one of the rarest feats in the history of Sikkim.”

Earlier SCA president, Lobsang G Tenzing informed that Sikkim will soon become a member of BCCI which will help cricketers from Sikkim.
