ARTEM to host Darj based singer-songwriter and activist Prashid Rai

Gangtok, 26 May:

ARTEM, a platform for people engaged in the creative field is set to host singer-songwriter and social activist from Darjeeling, Prashid Rai on 27 May at its office in Sichey, East Sikkim.

The event will feature a discussion on his music which are largely political, a press release informs.

Born and brought up at Magaret’s Hope Tea Estate in Darjeeling, Prashid Rai had close relatives who worked in the very gardens that have been the backdrop of many of his songs.

Prashid credits his musical influence to his social activist father and his mother who were both part of a cultural group.

Prashid Rai previously studied psychology and is currently pursuing ITI electrical engineering.

Prashid is a part of various organizations and has been associated with Laali Guraas for the past six years. Chai Bagan Sangram Samiti (CBSS) is another forum with which he has been working with since its inception in 2014. CBBS works for the rights of the tea garden workers.

Prashid Rai's music calls for awareness and an awakening against oppression, a call which emanates from the social and political situation in the Darjeeling Hills, the release reads.
