300 clean-up drives across the country under Himalayan Cleanup initiative: organizers

Responding to the call of the Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) and Zero Waste Himalaya to beat plastic pollution a host of organizations from across the 12 mountain States of the country took part in the nation-wide Himalayan Cleanup on 26 May, a press release from Zero Waste Himalaya informs.
The release further informs that with the involvement of Government, Non Government Organisations, community based organisations and volunteers, around 15,000 participants were mobilised by more than 200 organisations who participated in the cleanup campaign.
“Nearly 300 cleanup events were organized throughout the Himalayan region of the country,” the release informs.
‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the theme for World Environment Day 2018 is a call to action for people to come together to combat one of the greatest challenges of plastic pollution.
In Sikkim, the Himalayan Cleanup was taken up by the Rural Management and Development Department with most Block Administrative Centers being involved in the initiative in their own areas. Other organizations that made up the over 80 cleanups happening in Sikkim simultaneously were led by Namchi Municipality, Namchi College, Tsomgo Pokhri Sanrakshan Samiti, Lachen Tourism Development Committee and many other educational institutes, NGOs and volunteers of the State.
In Gangtok, the cleanup drive was organised by the Zero Waste Himalaya at Tashi View Point with more than 50 volunteers from Sikkim University, Sikkim Government College, GB Pant, EQUIP and Ted X Gangtok Group.
Mayor, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Shakti Singh Chaudhary and Principal Secretary, Forest Department, Dr Thomas Chandy and GMC commisoner, Tsewang Gyachho flagged off the drive.
The planning for The Himalayan Cleanup was undertaken at a workshop organized in Gangtok on 11 May with participation of representatives from 12 mountain States comprising of Swachh Bharat Mission representatives, civil societies and academia, as per the release.
