Bermiok poultry hatchery re-opens after 6 years

Poultry hatchery of Bermiok in South Sikkim which had remained closed since 2012 was today re-opened in a function attended by Minister for Animal Husbandry, Livestock Fisheries & Veterinary Sciences, Somnath Poudyal. Mr Poudyal also distributed the first batch of boiler chicks for the progressive farmers of South and East district.

The programme was also attended by Panchayats, Secretary, Dr Kumar Bhandari, Principal Director, Dr Ram Tamang, Director [Extension & Training Cell], Dr PK Pradhan, Managing Director [State Hatchery Limited], Dr DK Pradhan, Joint Direct [South], Dr T Bajgai, Veterinary Officer, Bermiok, Dr Suman Tamang, VO, Namchi, Dr Kinchokla Bhutia, and VO, SHL, Dr Sangyog Rai.

Addressing the function, Mr Poudyal congratulated the departmental officers and Sikkim Hatchery Limited for successfully reopening the poultry boiler chick hatchery of Bermiok which will benefit all poultry farmers of Sikkim.

He said that agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry are important sectors in economic development of the State. All the policies of the Government are always inclined towards the interest of the farmers and it will be successful if farmers cooperate with the Government, he added.

“State Government’s vision of Organic Mission is another big step taken by the Government in the interest of farmers of the State and this mission will be the future profession of coming generation,” Mr Poudyal expressed.

He urged progressive farmers of the State to bring a conscious revolution in the pattern of farmers’ practices which will also bring collective benefits in line with sustainable development.

Secretary, Dr Bhandari, in his address said, “It is a clear intention of the State Government to make the State self sufficient and a fully organic State. At present, Sikkim has 50,000 capacity in poultry farming but the requirement is 90,000. Though the production will not meet the requirement, the Government is trying to make progress in every sector but it will be the farmers who will help complete the vision and mission of the State Government.”

He also said that the Bermiok hatchery will be a support for poultry growers and urged poultry growers of the State to make proper use and put forward suggestions for the department to make it a fully functional hatchery of the State.

Managing Director, SHL, Dr Pradhan, presented a brief report about Bermiok hatchery and also placed demands for upgradation of the hatchery.
